Medellin Car Rentals Frequently Asked Questions
1- What is the first step to reserve the vehicle?
You can fill out the Car Rental Inquiry Form on the right hand side of this page. I typically respond within one hour to confirm the price and availability of the car you are interested or I can send you several optiosn depending on what type of car you are looking for. I prefer doing all the reservations and quote by email but if it is urgent and you would like to speak with me right away I can be reached on my Colombian cell phone, (301) 795-7822 or you can call my US # (949) 812-5974 and it will forward to my Cell Phone here in Medellin.
2- How do I confirm the reservation?
Once I have confirmed with you the availability and price with you the next step to confirm the reservation is to pay the security deposit listed for each car in cash or by paypal if you want to pay by credit/debit card.
3- Are the cars insured and how much is the Security Deposit?
The security deposit required is between $325 USD and $550 USD depending on which car it is and are held in case of damages, theft, or traffic tickets. The cars are insured and there is a 10% deductible with a minimum of $325 USD in cases the damages exceed $325 and require repair through the insurance.
4- What are my payment options?
The entire rent plus is due when or before you arrive and take possession of the car. The rent is typically paid in cash in pesos or dollars. Other options for payment include by deposit into either my Bank of America, Chase Bank or Citi Account in the United States. Deposit into my Citibank account here in Colombia. If you want to pay the rent part due with a credit card you can pay via Paypal however I add 3.5% to the amount to cover the paypal fees (4% if you if you’re paypal account has an address outside of the United Sates since I am charged more).
5- What Is Your Cancellation Policy?
If you decide to cancel the car rental reservation I will refund the full deposit if given notice at least 1 week before the scheduled pick up date. If you cancel the reservation less than 7 days before the I refund the full deposit minus $80 USD / 150.000 pesos since I have missed out on other reservation opportunities in the meantime since I have been saving the rental for your reservation. If you do not advise me of the cancellation until less than 24 hours prior to scheduled pick up time I will deduct $120 USD / 225.000 pesos from your security deposit.
6- What documents are required to rent the car?
A Valid Drivers License (Foreign or Colombian) and Identification (Passport or Cedula) Required.
7- Can I take the car to other cities in Colombia?
These cars are intended for driving in and around Medellin (within 100 km radius) so that we can reach you and provide support in case something happens. If the renter would like to take the car a little further than this, permission is given on a case by case basis.
8- What are the maximum daily limits?
Maximum allowed daily kilometer limits are 150 KM. 500 pesos will be charged for each additional KM driven above this allowance.
9- Will the car have gas in it and be clean when we receive it?
The cars are all rented in clean condition and with gas in the tank. Renter is responsible for returning it in the same condition and with the same amount of gas. If not we can deduct the amount of gas lacking from the security and/or a cleaning fee of $13 USD / 20.000 pesos from the security deposit.
10 – Where and how do I pick up the car?
The cars are typically picked up and dropped off at our location in El Poblado, Medellin. The address is CR 45 #1-59 and it is located in the neighborhood El Poblado called called Patio Bonito in. If you would like someone to pick you up on the airport, we offer that service for $50 additional or you can have a friend or relative with a valid driver’s license pick it up from our location. In this case the rent and security deposit would all have to be paid before we hand the vehicle over.
11- What Are the Typical Pick Up And Drop Off Times?
Typically the pick up times are 1 PM and Drop Off times are before 12 PM. If the car is available sooner than 1 PM I will do my best to accommodate you for an earlier pick up time. Although the typical time to return the car is before 12 PM (Noon) we are flexible if given advanced notice. If you rent the car later in the day you will generally be able to move back the agreed to turn in time as well. Whatever the time is that we have agreed for you to turn in the car, if you return the car much later than the agreed upon time we reserve the right to charge 1/6 of the daily rent for each hour past the turn in deadline. For example if the car is expected to be returned at 1 PM and you turn the car in at 4 PM without prior permission we would charge you 1/2 of the daily rent amount. This policy is due to the fact that there is probably someone waiting to rent the car after you return it so if we don’t get it back at the expected time that will delay it’s being ready for the next customer pick up.
11- What is Pico y Placa?
Each car has 2 days per week in which it is subject to the “Pico Y Placa” law, which means depending on what last digit of the license plate is, this vehicle cannot be driven inside Medellin between 6:30-8:30 AM and 5:30-7:30 PM. However, during these hours these cars still can be driven in any other part outside of the Medellin city limits such as Envigado, Rio Negro etc. I have included the specific days that each car cannot be driven in information about it above. The days that these cars cannot be driven changes every 6 months but the current days and times corresponding to the license numbers can also be viewed at Pico Y Placa medellin if you would like further information.
12- How is the security deposit returned?
When you check out the car I will send you a detailed email with photos and a detailed description the condition of the rental as well as the amount of gasoline and kilometers it had when you took it off the lot. If there are any you can call me or respond to the email to clear up any discrepancies. When you turn in the car I will look it over with you present and confirm there have not been any major scrapes or damages happen to the car while it was in your possession. Once I have done this and verified there are no outstanding tickets I will return your deposit. Assuming there are no damages, tickets and the car is returned in the same condition as when I rented it you will receive a full refund of your security deposit. 13- What Are Foto Multas and why do I need to be very aware of these?
In the past year, There have been over 100 cameras (Foto Multas) placed all over Medellin that now automatically fine for traffic violations such as speeding, running red lights and illegal parking and charge the fine to the registered car owner… As a result Medellin Rentals as well as most other agencies have been forced to revise their deposit return policy. Since the fines delay in showing up in the records, we now must wait 3 days to verify there are no outstanding tickets before returning the client’s security deposit.
